Who I am
My name is Jens C. Krause, and I am a 33 year old physician. As a child, my father let me use his Ricoh SLR during vacations. During medical school, I picked up a camera again after I had bought a CoolScan IV mainly to scan those old images. I developed a strong interest in macro photography. I was always fascinated with butterflies as a child, so insects became a primary target. I still like chasing after butterflies and other small critters, but I soon discovered that there were so many flowers and mushrooms along the way that were not only beautiful motives, but also more patient subjects. Finally able to afford a super-tele lens for wildlife photography, I consider myself a nature generalist photographer. I use small format cameras because tele-macros and super-teles are not available in bigger formats. I settled on Nikon equipment as I continue to be very impressed by Nikon's ergonomics, the engineering (particularly the durability of the F mount), the sharpness of their high end lenses, the consistency of the metering, and the reliability.
A native of Cologne, I have lived in Heidelberg and Baden-Baden (during medical school), Massachusetts (during residency), and now in Tennessee where I complete a fellowship with research in immunology. It is with this scientific curiosity that I pursue nature photography. I did not plan to become a vagabond, but I do feel very privileged to have lived in such spectacular surroundings: The biodiversity in East Tennessee is amazing, especially for macro photography, so I have really no excuses for bad images. All images you see on this website were created in the wild, often on long hikes in State or National Parks.
